Live Season Latest: 17 December

17 Dec 2009

Get online with these players and teams to maximise your chances.

GK: Jaroslav Drobny, Hertha Berlin - 89 (87)
Hertha Berlin are propping up the rest of the Bundesliga at the moment, so Drobny's inclusion in the team of the week may come as a surprise. But the Hertha stopper played a full part in his side's hard-fought draw with league leaders Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. In fact, Hertha's dramatic late equaliser came after the keeper joined his teammates up front for a corner, distracting Bayer's Sammi Hyypia long enough to allow Hertha striker Ramos to head it home.

Def: Philipp Lahm, Bayern Munich - 93 (86)
Bayern play Hertha next in the Bundesliga, but unlike struggling Hertha, Bayern are on an impressive streak of 13 games undefeated. Last time out they thrashed Bochum 5-1 to move to their highest position in the table this season. Lahm strode confidently into the Bochum area to set up the fifth goal.

Def: Thomas Vermaelen, Arsenal - 86 (84)
Live Season can't take into account midweek games (since the data is pushed into your console on a Wednesday night), so Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Burnley doesn't count. And that's fortunate for Vermaelen, who had a torrid time at Turf Moor. Vermaelen's great form prior to that, and his solid performance in Arsenal's 2-1 away win at Liverpool, get him his place in the team this week.

Def: Gabriel Heinze, Marseille - 86 (76)
Marseille continue to chase high-flyers Bordeaux at the top of Ligue 1, and they did so last weekend with a 2-0 win over lowly Boulogne. Gabriel Heinze netted first for the home side - a stunning header from a corner - and is justly rewarded for his efforts.

Def: Leighton Baines, Everton - 88 (81)
Most fans wouldn't have been placing bets on Everton scoring three goals at Stamford Bridge last weekend, but that's just what they did in a six-goal thriller. Baines' cross set up the first of Everton's goals and a decent show throughout gets him a hefty points uplift and slot on the roster.

Mid: Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid - 96 (94)
Ronaldo has been on a bit of indifferent run of late. But then for him that's anyone else's hot streak. But he's coming good now, and some. Suspension kept him off the teamsheet last weekend, but performances around that have seen him shining. Especially when he takes his shirt off. And gets suspended. Silly boy.

Mid: Esteban Cambiasso, Inter Milan - 93 (91)
It was actually Cambiasso's midfield teammate Milito who bagged Inter's only goal against Atalanta last weekend. Despite almost unluckily putting the ball in the back of his own net, too, Cambiasso bossed the midfield effectively enough in a tough game (Inter played with 10 men for the last 25 minutes) to see his rating jump this week.

Mid: Heiko Westermann, Schalke 04 - 89 (82)
Schalke brought to an end the impressive Werder Bremen's 23-match unbeaten run last weekend with an admirable 2-0 victory away from home. It pinged Schalke up into second in the Bundesliga and above their hosts. Westermann's performance in a complete team display sees him into the team of the week.

Mid: Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid - 91 (89)
Liverpool's strife this season can be attributed in part to the departure of Alonso to Real Madrid, and his performances for the Galacticos are showing why. Alonso angled in a beautiful free-kick for sub Ezequiel Garay to glance home for a dramatic late winner in a breathtaking 3-2 win over host Valencia last Saturday.

Fwd: Karim Bezema, Real Madrid - 92 (85)
Real Madrid's heavy presence in this week's Live Season team continues with Karim Benzema. The pricey Frenchman produced a brilliant move to set up Madrid's first goal and remained a threat until being subbed off on 85 minutes. Worth the price? Maybe. Worth a place in the team this week? Definitely.

Fwd: Mario Gomez, Bayern Munich - 92 (92)
Mario Gomez has played a large part in his side's rise of late. He scored the first of Bayern's five goals against Bochum last weekend, and his testing cross was put in by a Bochum defender for the second. Gomez' impressive strike partnership with Ivica Olic was present for all to see last weekend, and reflected in the scoreline.

Top Teams

Take these guys online against your usual Chelseas, Barcelonas, Man Utds etc. They're on fire and could net you some serious pointage.

Palermo
Palermo tonked AC Milan 2-0 at the San Siro on Sunday, and that's enough to raise anyone up the respect table. Their first-team players have scooted upwards in ratings across the board, particularly keeper Salvatore Sirigu, who had an immense afternoon against Milan.

Lille
Two successive 4-0 victories in the space of three days is always going to lift the confidence a bit. Lille beat St. Etienne at home last Thursday before travelling to Monaco to send them packing, too. They're riding high in Ligue 1 now, and if that wasn't enough they also have a bright young striker called Eden Hazard, which is the best name any footballer's ever had.

Borussia Dortmund
These boys are flying at the moment. They beat Wolfsburg 3-1 last Sunday away from home to extend an unbeaten streak to nine games. And yes, that's the Bundesliga's defending champions. Dortmund are now up to sixth in the table, while Wolfsburg have dropped to ninth. Bit more changeable than the Premier League, eh. Get them online now, then, before things change some more.
