In this week’s FIFA 10 podcast Romily Broad and myself discussed the merits of European football’s two biggest prizes and I was of the opinion that The Premier League is worth far more than the Champions League.
If you ask any Liverpool fan what they’d rather win the majority would say the Premier League, without hesitation, and not because they’ve been spoiled by their glut of European trophies but simply because they know that domestic glory carries more prestige. They long to be champions of England once more.
I always look forward to Champions League games but as a test of footballing endurance it simply cannot compare with the challenge of The Premier League.
It is the greatest league in the world and where any player with any ambition should want to play. Clubs like Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal transcend football, they inspire devotion around the world. It wouldn’t be a shock to venture into the wilds of the Amazon jungle and spot a tribesman in a Chelsea shirt. Although to be fair I hear the Amazon is Arsenal territory.
It’s also the league that offers the fiercest competition unlike La Liga’s two-horse race and the dead wood that is allowed to enter the Champions League. Let’s not forget that you don’t even have to be a League Champion to enter.
However, I don’t dispute that to be crowned European Champions is an incredible achievement. But it’s a sideshow when the main event will always be the English Premier League.
