The Big Shout - A European Super League?

Regular listeners to the FIFA 10 podcast will know that in our feature ‘The Big Shout’ Romily Broad and myself tackle the big talking points of the day. This week we responded to comments by Florentino Perez - the Real Madrid president - who said there was a need for the top teams in Europe to break away and form a European Super League.

“I haven’t signed all these top players to play against Getafe,” El Presidente said. And you know what? I agree with him.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal should be free to leave the English Premier League and compete against the best teams in Europe, something that doesn’t even happen in the Champions League with so much dead wood like Shaktar Donesk featuring in the competition.

And quite simply, Man Utd are too good to be playing against the likes of Burnley. The gap has widened too far and they deserve to be on the best footballing stage possible, such as a European Super League.

It would certainly benefit our England international players, who would be tested every week by the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid rather than Stoke and Wigan.

The Premiership would also be far more competitive with the departure of the top four, with teams such as Aston Villa, Everton and Spurs as league contenders rather than just also-rans.

I’m afraid that there is no way of putting the genie back in the bottle. The top clubs exist in their own universe and we should allow them to leave and head to where the stars will shine brightest.

But what do you reckon? Listen to this week’s podcast and you’ll be left in no doubt that Rom and his mates on Twitter think Florentino Perez is talking rubbish. And that I’m an idiot for backing him. Harsh.

The Big Shout is recorded as part of the EA SPORTS FIFA 10 podcast every Thursday morning, 10:00 GMT. Want to get involved? Follow EARom on Twitter.
